Teachers' Day in Brazil
October 15 · Level 3 · #1633 of 2238
Dia do Professor is the day Brazilians thank the people who teach their children. The date goes back to an imperial decree signed by Pedro I on 15 October 1827, which ordered the opening of basic schools.
How it is celebrated: pupils bring teachers flowers, cards and small gifts, schools put on festive programmes, and many have no classes at all that day.
The 1827 decree called for primary schools in the cities and towns of the empire, so the holiday also recalls the first steps toward public schooling in Brazil.
