International Day of Rural Women

The International Day of Rural Women honours women in the countryside for their part in growing food, building communities and keeping families going. The UN General Assembly established it in 2007.

How it is celebrated: conferences, craft exhibitions, farmers' fairs and meetings take place, where people discuss women's access to land, training and credit.

According to the UN, rural women make up more than a quarter of the world's population. The day was first observed in 2008.
