White Cane Day
October 15 · Level 5 · #1261 of 2238

The white cane helps blind and partially sighted people move confidently through a city and tells everyone around them what it is. This day draws attention to it and to streets that work for everyone.
How it is celebrated: organisations of blind people run campaigns and school sessions where visitors try walking with a cane while blindfolded, and drivers and pedestrians are reminded how to give way.
A popular origin story credits Bristol photographer James Biggs, who lost his sight, with painting his cane white in 1921 so that drivers would notice him on the road.
