Sports Day in Japan
October 12 · Level 9 · #273 of 2238

Japan's Sports Day celebrates movement, health and the pleasure of being active together. Usually held on the second Monday in October, it falls on a different calendar date from year to year.
How it is celebrated: schools and communities organise sports festivals featuring relay races, team games and tug-of-war. Sports facilities also offer activities that let people try something new without needing to be competitive athletes.
The holiday originally fell on 10 October, the date of the opening ceremony of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
