Russian Navy Navigators' Day
January 25 · Level 8 · #660 of 2238
Russian Navy Navigators' Day honours the specialists responsible for establishing a ship's position and plotting a safe course. Their work combines careful calculation with an understanding of conditions at sea, where a small navigational error can have serious consequences.
How it is celebrated: naval units congratulate serving navigators and veterans, hold ceremonial gatherings and present awards. Naval educational institutions also reflect on the history of navigation training and the people who have passed those skills on.
Celestial navigation still has a place alongside satellite systems. Observations of the Sun and stars can help establish a vessel's position without receiving a navigation satellite signal.
