Saint Cecilia's Day in Mexico
November 22 · Level 6 · #955 of 2238

This is the feast of Saint Cecilia, patron saint of musicians, and in Mexico it has grown into a celebration of music itself. Players honour their heavenly patron and their craft.
How it is celebrated: churches hold Masses and musicians play and sing for the saint, often starting with the traditional morning song "Las Mañanitas". Mariachi bands gather in the squares, and concerts and shared meals follow.
In Mexico City the favourite meeting place for mariachis is Plaza Garibaldi. In 2011 UNESCO added mariachi to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
