Russian Language Day at the UN

This is one of the UN's language days, dedicated to Russian, one of the organisation's six official languages. The date is a nod to literature: Alexander Pushkin, often called the founder of modern Russian literary language, was born on 6 June 1799.

How it is celebrated: UN offices, universities and cultural centres around the world host poetry readings, lectures, exhibitions and quizzes for Russian learners and speakers.

The UN's six official languages are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish, and each of them has its own day on the organisation's calendar.
