Pushkin Day in Russia marks Alexander Pushkin's birthday and celebrates his poetry, fiction and fairy tales. It is a chance to revisit familiar lines or discover why his writing holds such a prominent place in Russian culture.
How it is celebrated: libraries host readings and quizzes, museums offer themed programmes, and admirers leave flowers at monuments to the poet. Public literary events bring his work off the page through spoken performances.
His famous Eugene Onegin is a novel written in verse, using a distinctive fourteen-line stanza now known as the Onegin stanza.
