International Day for the Right to the Truth
March 24 · Level 9 · #353 of 2238

Victims of gross human rights violations and their families have the right to know what really happened. This day reminds us that the truth about such crimes is a part of justice and of respect for the dignity of those who suffered.
How it is celebrated: the UN and human rights groups issue statements, hold panel discussions and exhibitions, and communities remember those who were killed or disappeared. Truth commissions and the careful keeping of archives often get special attention.
The date was chosen to honour Archbishop Óscar Romero, who was shot in San Salvador on 24 March 1980 after speaking out for the poor and against violence. The UN General Assembly established the day in 2010.
