Pygmy Hippo Day
April 8 · Level 3 · #1583 of 2238
Pygmy Hippo Day shines a light on a rare West African forest animal that is at risk of disappearing. It is a relative of the common hippo, but far more modest in size.
How it is celebrated: zoos tell visitors about their pygmy hippos, conservation groups raise money to protect forests, and schools draw and learn about these shy animals.
An adult pygmy hippo weighs no more than about 275 kilograms, several times less than a common hippo. It lives mainly in the forests and swamps of Liberia and neighbouring countries.
