International Roma Day
April 8 · Level 5 · #1170 of 2238
International Roma Day celebrates Roma history and culture while drawing attention to rights and discrimination. It is an opportunity to learn about diverse Roma communities and hear their voices beyond familiar stereotypes.
How it is celebrated: concerts, exhibitions, public discussions and educational events bring people together. Community organisations share Roma history, language and experiences of campaigning for equal rights.
The date recalls the first World Romani Congress in 1971. The flag adopted there combines blue for the sky and green for the earth with a red wheel recalling the Roma people’s Indian origins.
