Port Said Liberation Day
December 23 · Level 9 · #381 of 2238

Egyptians remember the end of the foreign occupation of Port Said after the Suez Crisis of 1956. The city at the mouth of the Suez Canal became a symbol of resilience and national pride.
How it is celebrated: Port Said holds official ceremonies, lays wreaths at memorials, and stages parades and concerts. Veterans and schoolchildren share stories of those days, and flags line the waterfront.
Port Said was founded in 1859, when work on the Suez Canal began, and was named after the Egyptian ruler Said Pasha. President Nasser nationalised the canal in July 1956, which set the crisis in motion.
