Festivus

Festivus is a tongue-in-cheek holiday "for the rest of us", made famous by the TV show Seinfeld. It was dreamed up as a cheeky answer to the shopping and fuss of the season.

How it is celebrated: family or friends sit down to dinner around a bare aluminum pole with no decorations. Then comes the Airing of Grievances, where everyone tells the others how they have let them down, and the Feats of Strength, which end only when the head of the household is pinned.

The holiday came from the family of Seinfeld writer Dan O'Keefe, and it hit the screen in the episode "The Strike" in December 1997. The pole, we are told, is chosen for its high strength-to-weight ratio.
