Ossetian Language and Literature Day

Ossetian Language and Literature Day celebrates a language that carries poetry, family memories and the Nart epic tradition. It encourages people to learn and use Ossetian, while introducing readers to its writers, including the poet Kosta Khetagurov.

How it is celebrated: schools and cultural institutions hold poetry readings, recitation contests, book displays and lessons. Hearing literature aloud is an important way to connect everyday speech with the written works it has inspired.

Ossetian is spoken in the Caucasus, but belongs to the Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. Persian and Tajik are among its linguistic relatives.
