International Conscientious Objectors' Day

International Conscientious Objectors' Day recognises people whose deeply held moral or religious beliefs prevent them from undertaking military service. It draws attention to freedom of conscience and to those who face punishment because of their refusal.

How it is celebrated: peace and human rights groups organise vigils, public meetings and awareness campaigns. Participants share objectors' experiences, show solidarity with prisoners and discuss civilian alternatives to military service.

Conscientious objection does not have to come from religious belief. Secular ethical convictions, including a principled opposition to taking part in war, can also lie behind the decision.
