International Day of Families

The International Day of Families is a UN observance focused on family life and the conditions people need to care for one another. Alongside time together, it highlights practical issues such as support for parents, access to education and balancing paid work with caring responsibilities.

How it is celebrated: community gatherings, family activities, lectures and policy discussions explore the challenges households face. Organisations share research and ideas for making daily life more secure and manageable.

The UN established the observance in 1993, just before an entire year devoted to the subject: 1994 was the International Year of the Family.
