Nobel Prize Day

Every 10 December marks the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, and it is the day the world's most famous prizes are handed out. Laureates are honoured for work in science, literature and peace.

How it is celebrated: in Stockholm, the King of Sweden presents medals and diplomas at the Concert Hall, and guests then sit down to a grand banquet in the City Hall. The Peace Prize is awarded the same day in Oslo, in a separate ceremony at the City Hall there.

Nobel signed his will in 1895, and the first prizes were awarded in 1901, five years after he died.
