National Jandal Day in New Zealand
December 2 · Level 2 · #1811 of 2238

A lighthearted, informal celebration of New Zealand's favourite footwear. Kiwis call flip-flops jandals and wear them almost anywhere, from the beach to the corner shop.
How it is celebrated: people slip on their favourite jandals, post photos online and daydream about summer by the sea. Some decorate their pairs, and the bravest wear them where closed shoes would normally be expected.
The word jandal is short for Japanese sandal. The same shoe is called thongs in Australia and flip-flops in the United States, so ordering one abroad can lead to some funny confusion.
