International Day for the Abolition of Slavery
December 2 · Level 10 · #68 of 2238

Slavery is not just history: today it survives as forced labour, human trafficking and forced marriage. This day draws attention to these forms of exploitation and calls for action against them.
How it is celebrated: the UN and human rights groups hold conferences, awareness campaigns and events supporting survivors, while schools and museums tell the history of slavery.
The date marks 2 December 1949, when the UN General Assembly adopted a convention against human trafficking. The International Labour Organization estimated that about 50 million people were living in modern slavery in 2021.
