Luxembourg National Day
June 23 · Level 7 · #746 of 2238
Luxembourg's National Day grew out of celebrations for the sovereign's birthday and became a holiday for the whole country. Official ceremonies share the occasion with lively public festivities across the Grand Duchy.
How it is celebrated: the capital hosts a torchlight procession, concerts and fireworks on the evening before. The day itself includes an official ceremony, a military parade and a ceremonial religious service, with local celebrations elsewhere too.
The June date was fixed during Grand Duchess Charlotte's reign even though her birthday was in January: summer offered better weather for celebrating.
