Start of the Nativity Fast

The Nativity Fast is a forty-day period of preparation for Christmas in the Orthodox tradition. It begins on 28 November and runs until 6 January.

How it is celebrated: believers give up meat and, on stricter days, dairy, attend church more often, pray and help people in need. On certain days church rules allow fish.

The fast is also called the Philip’s Fast, because it starts the day after the commemoration of the Apostle Philip on 27 November.
