Military Counterintelligence Day honours the officers and veterans of the service that guards the army and navy against spying, sabotage and leaks of secrets. It is marked on 19 December.
How it is celebrated: there are formal meetings, awards, reunions of several generations of counterintelligence officers, and flowers laid at memorials to colleagues who died in the line of duty.
The date goes back to 19 December 1918, when the Special Department was set up under the Cheka, the Soviet security agency of that time. It became the foundation of military counterintelligence in Russia.
