International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem

Mangroves are far more than tangled trees standing in salt water: they shield tropical coasts, shelter fish and birds, and store carbon. This day, proclaimed by UNESCO in 2015, is a reminder to look after them.

How it is celebrated: volunteers plant seedlings on coastal mudflats and clear litter, school groups visit mangrove reserves, and conservationists give talks on how to keep these forests healthy.

The Sundarbans, in the delta where the Ganges and Brahmaputra meet the sea, is the largest mangrove forest in the world. It is shared by Bangladesh and India.
