Esperanto Day

This is the day of Esperanto, a language invented so that people from any country could talk to each other on equal terms. The date marks the publication of the first book that introduced the language.

How it is celebrated: speakers gather in clubs and online for talks, poetry readings and singalongs in Esperanto, and newcomers get a first taste of the language. The movement's emblem is a green star.

Ludwik Zamenhof published that first book in Warsaw in 1887 under the pen name Doctor Esperanto, meaning "one who hopes". The nickname soon became the name of the language itself.
