Every friendship started with someone saying hello first. Make a Friend Day nudges people to talk to the classmate, colleague or neighbour they have never quite got around to meeting.
How it is celebrated: people introduce themselves to newcomers at school or at work, invite someone for a coffee, or message an old acquaintance they lost touch with. Even a smile and a "How is your day going?" in the lift counts.
It is an informal observance found in American calendars of fun days, and it needs no gifts or preparation, just one friendly question.
