Kyrgyzstan National Literature Day

Kyrgyzstan National Literature Day celebrates books, the written word and the people who create them. It is a reminder that Kyrgyz literature grew out of a living oral tradition of bards and storytellers.

How it is celebrated: libraries and schools host readings and meetings with writers, and readers pull out favourite pages from classic and contemporary authors.

The Kyrgyz epic Manas is counted among the longest epic poems in the world, and UNESCO has listed the trilogy of Manas, Semetey and Seytek as intangible cultural heritage. The French writer Louis Aragon called Chingiz Aitmatov's novella Jamila the most beautiful love story in the world.
