Gingerbread House Day
December 12 · Level 1 · #2236 of 2238

Gingerbread House Day is all about edible architecture: houses are baked from spiced dough, glued with icing and covered in sweets. The aim is not perfect walls but the fun of building something together.
How it is celebrated: families and friends gather around the kitchen table to bake walls and roofs, stick them together with icing and compete over whose house is the fanciest. A roof that slides off can still be eaten.
Hansel and Gretel, the tale of a house made of bread and sweets, appeared in the first volume of the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales, published in 1812. Gingerbread houses have been tied to winter festivities ever since.
