January 3 · Level 8 · #538 of 2238
3 January is the birthday of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Fans mark it to thank the man who gave them Middle-earth.
How it is celebrated: readers dust off favourite chapters, line up a film marathon, throw themed parties and raise a glass in the traditional toast to the Professor.
Tolkien was born in 1892 in Bloemfontein, South Africa, and moved to England with his mother at the age of three.
