Carnival in Argentina

Argentine Carnival means weeks of street parades, drumming and sparkling costumes before Lent. Every town adds its own flavour, and the whole country slows down for a few days to join in.

How it is celebrated: troupes perform in squares and purpose-built carnival avenues, some dancing in feathers and rhinestones, others drumming candombe rhythms. In Buenos Aires, neighbourhood murga groups sing, dance and poke fun at the news while the crowd claps along.

The city of Gualeguaychú in Entre Ríos is famed for a carnival held in its own dedicated corsodrome, on summer weekends from January into February. The Monday and Tuesday of Carnival week are days off across Argentina.
