Drinking Straw Day
January 3 · Level 2 · #2011 of 2238

Drinking Straw Day gives a familiar little invention a moment in the spotlight. The informal occasion recalls the patent granted to American inventor Marvin Stone for a paper drinking straw on January 3, 1888.
How it is celebrated: enthusiasts make drinks served with straws, share the invention’s history and try different versions of the accessory. There is no fixed ceremony, so a favourite drink and a little curiosity are enough to take part.
The word “straw” preserves the object’s earlier form: people once sipped through hollow grain stalks. The manufactured paper tube was a replacement for actual straw.
