Estonian War of Independence Remembrance Day

Estonia remembers those who fought in its War of Independence of 1918–1920 and honours those who died. The observance connects the country’s independence with the lives and sacrifices of the people who helped defend it.

How it is celebrated: wreaths are laid at war memorials, commemorative ceremonies take place and a minute’s silence offers a shared pause for remembrance. The focus is on the war’s participants and the human cost of securing independence.

The silence is observed at 10:30 a.m., the time the ceasefire between Estonia and Soviet Russia took effect on January 3, 1920. The peace treaty followed later in Tartu.
