International Day of Journalists' Solidarity
September 8 · Level 9 · #294 of 2238

International Day of Journalists' Solidarity is an occasion for news workers to support one another and remember colleagues who have died. It also draws attention to press freedom, professional responsibility and the pressures faced by people reporting the news.
How it is celebrated: journalists' associations hold meetings and commemorations and publish messages supporting colleagues. Newsrooms discuss professional ethics and assistance for reporters facing persecution.
The date commemorates Czech journalist Julius Fučík, executed by the Nazis in 1943. Notes smuggled out of his prison later became the book commonly known in English as Notes from the Gallows.
