Battle of Borodino Day
September 8 · Level 7 · #733 of 2238

Russia remembers the Battle of Borodino, the largest clash between Russian and Napoleonic forces during the French invasion of 1812. The observance brings military history together with remembrance of those who died on the battlefield.
How it is celebrated: commemorative ceremonies and historical reenactments take place at Borodino. Museums offer tours, and visitors lay flowers at monuments to the soldiers who fought there.
Artist Franz Roubaud recreated the battle as an enormous circular painting. His panorama surrounds viewers with the scene, giving them the impression of standing inside the battle.
