International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day highlights how reading and writing help people learn, find work and make independent choices. Its focus extends beyond children: adults also need opportunities to develop these skills, whatever their age or circumstances.

How it is celebrated: libraries, schools and community organisations arrange reading activities, lessons and public discussions. Events draw attention to adult learning and the barriers that keep people out of education.

UNESCO proclaimed the day in 1966, and it was first observed in 1967. Literacy had its own international occasion long before the internet became part of everyday life.
