Inventors' Day

Inventors' Day falls on 9 November, the birthday of film star and inventor Hedy Lamarr. It is a day to celebrate people whose ideas quietly change everyday life.

How it is celebrated: in Germany and Austria it goes by the name Tag der Erfinder. Schools, museums and inventors' clubs put on exhibitions and contests, and tinkerers proudly show off their gadgets.

Hedy Lamarr was born in Vienna in 1914. With the composer George Antheil she patented a frequency-hopping method for secret radio communication, and similar ideas later proved useful in wireless technology.
