International Sloth Day
October 20 · Level 1 · #2174 of 2238
International Sloth Day puts the slow-moving mammals of Central and South America's tropical forests in the spotlight. Beyond their appealing faces, there is a conservation story: sloths depend on forest habitats for food, shelter and routes between trees.
How it is celebrated: conservation groups and rescue centres share sloth stories, run educational activities and raise funds for their work. They also explain how protecting forests and observing wildlife responsibly can help these animals.
A sloth's greenish coat is not simply a fur colour. Algae can grow in its hair, giving it a tint that helps it blend into the surrounding foliage.
