International Rum Day
August 16 · Level 6 · #923 of 2238

This day raises a glass to rum, the spirit distilled from sugarcane that people enjoy from the Caribbean to Europe. It is a good excuse to explore how many different flavours one bottle family can hold.
How it is celebrated: bars shake up mojitos and daiquiris, hold tastings of light, dark and spiced bottles, and friends gather for themed evenings at home.
Rum is made from sugarcane juice or from molasses, a by-product of sugar making. The British Royal Navy handed out a daily rum ration to its sailors until 1970.
