International Primate Day
September 1 · Level 9 · #443 of 2238

This day shines a light on primates, from lemurs and monkeys to great apes, and on the threats they face. Many species suffer from deforestation and poaching.
How it is celebrated: zoos, sanctuaries and wildlife reserves run talks and guided visits about their residents. Supporters donate to rainforest protection and spend an evening with a primate documentary.
There are more than five hundred known species of primates, and humans are one of them. Our closest living relatives among them are chimpanzees and bonobos.
