Uzbekistan Independence Day celebrates the country's emergence as an independent state in 1991. The national occasion brings together public ceremonies, cultural performances and time spent with family.
How it is celebrated: flags decorate streets, while concerts and dance performances fill public venues. Official events recognise distinguished citizens, and families share festive meals; the scale and programme of the main celebrations vary from year to year.
The declaration of independence actually came on 31 August. The following day was designated as the holiday, placing the anniversary of the decision and the celebration on consecutive dates.
