Emma Nutt Day

This day honours Emma Nutt, the first woman to work as a telephone operator. It is a nod to everyone who connected callers in the early years of the telephone.

How it is celebrated: people thank those who work the phones, such as operators, dispatchers and call-centre staff. Colleagues swap stories about their strangest calls, and many simply ring a friend or relative.

Emma Nutt began work in Boston on 1 September 1878. Her sister Stella soon became a telephone operator too.
