International Migrants Day
December 18 · Level 10 · #180 of 2238

This day reminds us that millions of people live and work far from the country where they were born, and that their rights deserve protection. The UN General Assembly proclaimed it in 2000.
How it is celebrated: UN agencies and community groups hold exhibitions, forums and festivals where migrants share their stories, food and music from home. Officials and charities also use the day to talk about safe work and fair treatment abroad.
The date was chosen with care: on 18 December 1990 the General Assembly adopted the convention on the rights of all migrant workers and members of their families.
