Arabic Language Day at the UN
December 18 · Level 4 · #1369 of 2238

This is the day the United Nations celebrates Arabic, its literature and its place in world culture. The date recalls 18 December 1973, when the General Assembly made Arabic an official and working language of the organisation.
How it is celebrated: UN offices host exhibitions, talks and concerts, and visitors try their hand at Arabic calligraphy or listen to classical and modern poetry. Panels often ask how the language can thrive online as well as in print.
Arabic is one of the six official languages of the UN, and its script runs from right to left.
