International Matchstick Day
March 2 · Level 5 · #1131 of 2238
This informal observance gives an everyday invention a closer look: the humble match. A small box connects the history of chemistry and manufacturing with the surprisingly varied artwork printed on match labels.
How it is celebrated: enthusiasts share collections, examine old packaging and explain how different matches work. There is no standard ceremony; a small display or a conversation about a family collection fits the occasion.
Collecting matchboxes and match labels has its own name: phillumeny. Those tiny surfaces have carried everything from advertisements and local landmarks to animal illustrations and themed series.
