International Jaguar Day
November 29 · Level 9 · #272 of 2238
This day is devoted to the jaguar, the biggest cat in the Americas, and to protecting the places it calls home. It is a reminder that looking after top predators helps keep whole forests and wetlands healthy.
How it is celebrated: conservation groups and zoos run talks, campaigns and school lessons, while communities in jaguar country share local protection projects. Many people simply swap photos and stories about this spotted hunter.
The jaguar is the only member of the Panthera genus living in the Western Hemisphere. Its range stretches from Mexico to northern Argentina, and unlike many cats it swims well and happily hunts near water.
