International Day of Democracy
September 15 · Level 9 · #297 of 2238

The International Day of Democracy is a UN observance about people having a voice in decisions that shape their lives. It highlights human rights, free elections and the freedom to discuss public affairs openly.
How it is celebrated: public debates, educational events and classroom activities explore how democratic institutions work. Civil society groups discuss participation, access to information and ways to make government more transparent and accountable.
The word democracy comes from ancient Greek words meaning people and power. The international observance is much younger: the UN General Assembly established it in 2007.
