International Creole Day
October 28 · Level 3 · #1613 of 2238

Creole languages were born where people with different mother tongues had to understand each other, and over time they became first languages for millions. This day celebrates them and the culture that grew around them.
How it is celebrated: across the Caribbean, the Indian Ocean islands and in diaspora communities, people hold concerts, storytelling and poetry evenings, and food fairs with local dishes. Many dress in traditional clothes and speak only Creole for the day.
Haitian Creole is a language in its own right, not a broken form of French. In Haiti it is an official language alongside French, and nearly everyone in the country speaks it.
