Independent Czechoslovak State Day
October 28 · Level 10 · #163 of 2238

Independent Czechoslovak State Day marks the establishment of Czechoslovakia on 28 October 1918. A public holiday in Czechia, it commemorates independence from Austria-Hungary and the beginning of a new chapter in Czech and Slovak history.
How it is celebrated: commemorative ceremonies, wreath-laying and cultural events take place. The president presents state honors at Prague Castle, and some government buildings welcome visitors for open days.
The country being celebrated no longer exists: Czechoslovakia peacefully split in 1993. Czechia nevertheless retains the anniversary as a defining milestone in its own statehood.
