International Animation Day
October 28 · Level 8 · #599 of 2238

International Animation Day celebrates the art of bringing drawings, puppets and digital images to life. The International Animated Film Association, ASIFA, established it in 2002 to introduce audiences to animation's many forms and the people who create them.
How it is celebrated: screenings of short films, retrospectives, filmmaker talks and workshops invite audiences behind the scenes. Participants try stop-motion techniques and discover how still images become movement.
The date recalls Émile Reynaud's optical theatre show in Paris in 1892. His projected, hand-drawn moving stories reached audiences before the Lumière brothers' famous cinema screenings.
