International Ataxia Awareness Day
September 25 · Level 3 · #1615 of 2238

Ataxia is a loss of coordination and balance, most often caused by problems in the cerebellum. This day helps people learn about the many forms of the condition, many of them rare, and show support for those who live with it and their families.
How it is celebrated: patient groups host online meetings and talks by specialists, raise money for research and organise charity walks and runs. On social media, people share personal stories and plain-language explainers.
The word ataxia comes from Greek and means roughly "lack of order". It fits the condition well: the body stops following the smooth plan the brain has in mind.
