International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

August 9 · Level 10 · #168 of 2238

International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

This day reminds us that Indigenous peoples keep their own languages, knowledge and ways of living with the land, and that their rights deserve protection. The United Nations marks it every year on 9 August.

How it is celebrated: communities and museums hold exhibitions, concerts and festivals of traditional music and crafts, schools talk about Indigenous languages and customs, and the UN picks a fresh theme each year.

The date is not random: the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations took place on 9 August 1982. The UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in 2007.
